As kitchen appliances go, there are few loved more than the dishwasher. They are a great convenience for modern living, but they can also be a pain in the neck when they’re not working properly.
If your dishwasher is lousy at cleaning dishes and you want to know how to fix it, then this blog post is perfect for you. Appliance Therapy will teach you a few steps you can take to diagnose what’s wrong with your dishwasher and get it back up and running again in no time!
Give It A Good Cleaning
The first, and often the simplest solution to dishwasher problems is getting it cleaned. While this may sound like a joke (how are you supposed to wash the inside of a washer?), there are actually products on the market which can help with cleaning out any grease, bits of food, or leftover detergent that has accumulated over time. These will work wonders in making sure your dishes come out as good as new!
Here’s one dishwasher cleaning recipe you can try:
- Add a cup of white vinegar to the bottom of the machine and run it on a normal cycle.
- Run the dishwasher again, but this time with half a cup of baking soda sprinkled inside the machine. If you’d like, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda (like lemon or peppermint) to make the dishwasher smell even better too!
- Finish off by running the machine on a third cycle, this time with just water to get rid of any remaining baking soda residue.
This simple recipe works better than many dishwasher cleaning products you could buy and is also safe to use on dishwashers that have stainless steel interiors if yours has this feature.
Check That You’re Loading It Correctly
The way you load dishes into your dishwasher can also have a big impact on how well it gets the job done. If there are too many plates inside, they might not get clean because the water doesn’t circulate properly around them.
The same goes if you’re stacking items so much that the water can’t get through them. If you’re having problems with your dishwasher, try rearranging things and see if it makes a difference!
Check That The Drainage Is Clear
One last thing to try if your dishwasher is leaving dishes dirty or not clean at all: check that the drainage area in front of the machine isn’t clogged.
If it’s blocked, water won’t be able to go out and this can prevent anything from getting washed properly! Clear any debris you find away and see what happens afterward.
You might also need to dig deeper into the drainage problem. Sometimes, even when you can’t see anything clogging the inside of the drain filter, that does not mean that the drain itself is clear.
Most dishwasher models allow you to take the internal drain assembly off so that you can get at the drain without having to pull out the dishwasher. If yours does, it is worth taking some time to get in there and clean out the gunk. A partially-blocked drain will lead to dirty dishes. A fully-blocked drain can lead to a messy catastrophe.
Still Not Working? Make The Call
If you’re not having any luck, it might be time for the professionals to take over. If the dishwasher is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer as they will likely have a contract with a local repair shop. A skilled technician can diagnose what’s wrong and get your dishes sparkling again in no time.
Above all, don’t continue to use a faulty dishwasher, or it may end up failing and causing water damage to your kitchen flooring.
